I talked to the independent Scottish musician Inkfields and asked him some questions about his past, beliefs and goals. His new EP „Danger Moose“ was recorded in Chamber Studio and will be released on the 28th of October. (save the date) The EP consists of both funky and epic guitar sounds, heavy drums, a truly unique voice and meaningful lyrics. (read more in my Danger Moose – Review next week)

When did you Start playing music and which instruments? 

Technically I started playing music when I was 10 years old. So that was basically 16 years ago. Back then it was just the classical guitar and I did not really like it. It was kind of a parent getting me to do it. So I did it for a couple of years and dropped it again. I really started playing from the age of 14, when I taught myself the electric guitar. Then I picked up the bass, played a bit of drums too and on my recordings I do some doodling on the piano too, although I am not really an expert.

Which instrument is your favourite one and why?

That’s a good question. I kind of like drifting in and out of favourite instruments. At the moment I like the electric guitar the most. A while ago I had a banjo phase, I like to play that as well. Sometimes I have a bass phase and a little bit of a piano phase. Most of the time it is the electric guitar. It is the instrument, which I started writing songs, with, so maybe that is why I like it that much.

Have you considered making electronic music?

I am actually working on a project at the moment with a producer from the deep trance/deep house scene. I composed a song for him. He is mixing it with his sounds. So there’s going to be a more electronic direction to Inkfields Tracks too.

So we will hear a little bit more into the direction of Trance from you?

That remains to be seen. I am still waiting for the final version of this project. It actually sounds kind of poppy, like some of the most recent tunes from Coldplay. It is kind of earworm stuff.

Who was your biggest influence as a teenager?

As an actual teenager, that would probably be Muse. When I was about 13 to 14. They really inspired me to write music. Stuff like Origin of symmetry – Plug in baby. I thought that was absolutely fantastic. I still think, that it is great, but my influences changed a little bit over time.

You obviously like Rock Music a lot?

I like everything.

Everything? 

There are also limits, like extreme opera and death metal aren’t really my cup of tea, but most things can have cool bits.

You’ve been on a tour in Germany. How did the people welcome you? What are your impressions.

Germany is absolutely great for playing music. That is one of the reasons why I am temporarily located here, seeing how i can build up a fanbase. It is just a great touring country. When I play, the audience is nearly up to dead silent. Everyone is giving me 100% concentration. You can hear a pin drop, it is really crazy. They also clap and cheer and scream for every song. The people here really seem to appreciate music.

Which music do you like to listen to when you are alone? Is there any kind of music you listen to?

When I am cooking I listen to either Coldplay, the Arctic Monkeys or Radiohead. That is kind of my cooking music, but when I am driving in the car, it could be anything. It is much more likely for me to listen to electronic music while I am driving.

Do you consider yourself a political person? What is your opinion on Brexit?

Some topics I examine, others I don’t really get myself involved in. On Brexit I was one of the people, who believed that it would be better to remain in the EU. I can see now, that Brexit has caused a lot of problems. I think it is going to be quite a bit of a down for a while, like in the next five years at least. The UK is definitely going to be struggling more, because of that decision. However, I think in the future, when we get through the hard times, it might end up being the best for the UK. It depends on who is in charge and what decisions they make. If the government is wise and makes some good decisions it could turn out well for the UK.

Do you believe in God or maybe a higher power?

Well, that would be a complicated topic for me. My family is religious and I was brought up religious, but later on I decided to kind of reject that. So I would not call myself religious, but I am open to the possibility of some kind of higher power. Whatever is responsible for everything that exists in the universe, can be defined as god. So the two particles that created the Big Bang or some kind of sentinent being, could be God.
Also I think that is the problem these days, that most of the people need to know all of the answers, but I came to realization, that it is OK not to know everything, because it is simply impossible.

If you could travel anywhere in the world in just one second, where would you go to?

(Laughs) I guess, Pitcairn Island.

Where is that?

You’ve never heard of that place? It is the remotest inhabited dwelling in the world. Around 40 people live there. I’d really like to see what the deal about that place is. It sounds really weird and crazy to me, but also very interesting.

One more political question. Do you think Donald Trump will be the President of the US?

(laughs again) I hope not. Trump the Trump

Do you have an idol?

I can’t really say that I have one in particular. I know a lot of people need to have one, but I can’t imagine a certain figure.

So you obviously want to play your own style, think out of the box?

Yeah, I don’t want to be like that guy or that other guy. I know that I am influenced all the time by the stuff I hear on the radio. But like a lot of other musicians I want to be original.

Do you consider yourself a dreamer?

I would say I am half – half. There are moments where I am a realist, but I have to be a dreamer to some extent. As a full-time musician it is kind of a risk for me to hang in the clouds too much, because there are some things that can seriously go wrong. I am also not the biggest artist in the world, so I need to make a living by playing music. I still believe that I can get to a higher place than where I am now.

Now a bit more of a concrete question: Do you already have plans for albums and concerts? You were in the studio last month? Is that correct?

Yeah, I was in the UK for a month. Most of the time I was travelling around and one week in the studio for my latest EP Danger Moose. As the plans are coming up, I’ll be recording another EP in March 2017 with the same studio. Following up, there will be my first ever album in 2017/18. So I planned pretty far ahead. I’ve already got a couple of gigs booked for next year. So there is a bit of stuff happening.

Would you like to play a concert in Austria?

I would love to play in Austria. I already had one offer to play in Vienna. I really would love to play some concerts and also at festivals.
